How Women Define Safety – Siebel

Women are told that they can’t do certain things because it’s not safe. They are told to dress a certain way, to walk in pairs at night, and avoid dark alleys. Women are constantly being put under scrutiny because of their clothing choices or the route they take home from work, but this d

oesn’t need to be the case! The problem isn’t with women; it’s with society as a whole. Society tells us what we should or shouldn’t do according to gender norms and stereotypes, so let’s break these societal rules by taking back safety!

Here are a few things you can do to take back safety as a woman:

  • Reach out for help from the police, but don’t let yourself be taken advantage of. Ask questions and have them walk through with you what is going on so that they cannot confuse your lack of knowledge for guilt.
  • Avoid walking alone at night! If you absolutely must, make sure that you have a self-defense tool on hand with which to protect yourself.
  • Be aware of your surroundings! This means not having headphones in and being able to hear what’s going on around you. It also means traveling at odd hours when the streets are less crowded.

You don’t need to let society tell you what is and isn’t safe. You can take back safety by taking responsibility for your own security!
